The area is a delight all year round with the constant back drop of the magnificent Pyrenees.  Saint Goin is a small village of around 200 inhabitants who have made us very welcome.  Community spirit is strong and in addition to the annual Fête du Village, there many other functions bringing opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

There is a village shop which also serves as a useful Relais de Poste, together with a bar.  The village is home to the valley’s Rugby Club and everyone is welcome at the bar on a Friday night as well as on match days.

There is also a useful bus service which runs through the village between Oloron Sainte-Marie and Mauleon.

An excellent and very popular small hotel restaurant is just a short walk away in the neighbouring village.

Out of the gate and turn left to Navarrenx, a delightful well-preserved bastide sitting above the Gave d’Oloron which also holds Plus Beaux Village status.  It is home to many small shops, including two very good butchers.  There are many fetes and festivals to enjoy throughout the year, including the annual Fête du Saumon each August to celebrate fish caught in the crystal clear rivers locally.

In the opposite direction is Oloron Sainte-Marie a bigger town whose floral displays each summer are simply gorgeous, plus the Christmas lights are a must see sight in winter.  It has all the amenities you could require, from a range of supermarkets including a huge Leclerc to a very good hospital!

Further afield is the cosmopolitan city of Pau which is either a 45 minute trip in the car or a short train trip from Oloron Sainte-Marie.

The Atlantic coast with its elegant resorts and beautiful beaches are only just over an hour away as is the nearest ski resort.

With the Spanish border so close, there is of course the opportunity to visit another country for lunch.  Up over the mountains to somewhere like Jaca with its huge choice of restaurants.  Or alternatively to the coast and the little water taxis that cross the estuary from Hendaye in France to Hondarribia in Spain for tapas.

The area is easily accessible by air with three local airports approximately an hour away.  Biarritz and Tarbes/Lourdes connecting to many European destinations.  While Pau has several flights each day from Paris, both Charles de Gaule and Orly.   The larger airports of Bordeaux and Toulouse are approximately 2 ½ hours away.

The excellent and comparatively quite road network including the A63 auto-route and the more recent A65 auto-route make for easy journeys south by car.
